This hillside Mid-Century Modern, nestled below the street in the San Gabriel Mountains, takes private advantage of the serene canyon views. The design reconstructed the interior spaces to embody family-oriented living, redefining public vs private spatial experiences, and transforming orientation to the exterior. The reworked circulation to private rooms hugs the canyon sides blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor, courting an ambiance of repose. The canyon serves as the inspirational palette for the interior materials and furnishings, allowing in nature’s hues. The selection of sustainable woods, slate, recycled glass tile, and sunset-colored textures combine as an indigenous, yet modern aesthetic. Project Designer: Nina Briggs
