A West Los Angeles conversion from a 1940’s garage to a lofted 1,000 square foot ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) prompted redefining smaller and functional yet expansive living. Designed for longevity and modest urban infill, this ADU carefully preserves the exterior architectural character of the eclectic neighborhood while modernizing the interior with all the amenities needed for long-term independent living, including a full kitchen, living space, bathroom, bedroom, laundry and a generous loft which can be used as office space, living space, or a second bedroom. Oriented for optimal passive solar conditions, including access to cooling ocean breezes, plenty of natural light is captured while reducing the heat gain and enabling cross-ventilation. Located at the rear of a corner lot, it is completely separated from the main residence, as the side opens to a private patio. Designed by Nina Briggs
