This well preserved split-level Mid-Century Modern originally designed by Architect Joseph Raella in 1961 is nestled in the Hollywood Hills, boasting a rare grassy back yard. Respectful of its original planning, it is lovingly renovated to update with sustainable materials and incorporate the owner’s Japanese culture. Interior and balcony spaces were repurposed to provide a master suite, with a Japanese bathing room, featuring an authentic cedar ‘Ofuro’ soaking tub. Shoji screened doors and windows slide to provide privacy and diffused light throughout. One enters the house via a two-story foyer with a ‘Genkan’ for removing shoes, and a small space was added to create a glass-enclosed Tatami meditation room facing a terraced garden. The kitchen and other bathrooms were modestly renovated to maintain their well-designed utility and scale.
